A five-year-old project to help members of a Vermont dairy cooperative achieve greater sustainability in their operations is now ready to go regional.
The Dairy Stewardship Alliance was launched in 2003 by the famed, environmentally- inclined ice cream makers Ben & Jerry’s, along with the 520-member St. Albans Cooperative Creamery and the University of Vermont’s Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Allen Matthews of the Center explains, “It was a research project when we started, to look at how to actually identify issues on the farm that the farmers needed some additional information on; that information could come back to Extension professionals, and they could put their training programs together.” |

If “things aren’t working quite right,” says Lon Whitlow, a professor of animal science and Extension dairy specialist at North Carolina State University, and a dairy producer finds his cows are off their feed, susceptible to illness or just not performing…it may be time to check the feed for mycotoxins.
Whitlow, an expert on Dairy cattle nutrition and feeding management says there’s been a lot of advancement in the area of mycotoxins, poisons produced by molds. “It appears to me,” he says, “that a lot of that advancement is coming on the agronomic side, particularly with genetics, so that the plant resists the disease in the field, and then the animal feeders don’t have to deal with these high levels in the grain or forage.” |
